The Basics

It is good to refresh our memory on these basics. In South India, almost all the key monuments will have references to gods, goddesses and mythological tales. Knowing these will help one appreciate the work by artists.

History

Srirangam is an island situated in the district of Thiruchirapalli in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is surrounded by the waters of Kaveri and Kollidam. This temple town is the abode of Sri Ranganatha Swamy.

This place is also called as the “Bhooloka Vaikuntam” i.e. Heaven on Earth. It’s said that this is one of the eight “Svayam Vyakta” i.e. self-manifested temples.
